Sunflowers, Zinnias, and the Joy of Childhood: A 6-Year-Old’s Farm Session

As a family photographer, one of the greatest joys of my job is capturing families and kiddos in all of their wonderful ages and seasons. Earlier this month, I had the privilege of photographing a vibrant 6-year-old in a session that was all about celebrating this magical age. It was one of those shoots that reminded me why I love what I do—and why it’s so important to freeze these moments in time.

There’s something incredibly special about photographing a kiddo at the age of six. It’s an age of discovery, curiosity, and boundless energy. They’re old enough to express their individuality yet still hold onto the innocence and wonder that defines early childhood. Every laugh, every curious glance, every moment of silliness—they’re all pure, unfiltered joy.

We started at the sunflower field and ended at the zinnia field. We took a break from the sun and heat in between for the most refreshing lavender lemonades in the shade tent. It was such a fun session filled with lots of laughter and silliness. After a busy week it was just what I needed.

PSA to all the parents out there: Photographing kiddos at this age is more than just a fun afternoon—it’s about creating a visual time capsule for the family. In a few years, this little dude will have grown and changed in so many ways, but these photos will always bring them back to this moment in time. They’ll be a reminder of the curiosity, joy, and boundless energy that defined their childhood.

For you as parents, these photos are a treasure. They’re a way to hold onto the little details that might otherwise be forgotten—the way their child’s eyes lit up when they talked about what makes them laugh, or the way their hair caught the sunlight as they ran through the flowers.

This is why I do what I do—to capture the moments that matter, to freeze time for just a little while, and to create memories that families will cherish for a lifetime.

Every kiddo’s journey is unique, and it’s an honor to be part of that journey, even for just an afternoon. I can’t wait to see what the future holds for this dude—and I’m already looking forward to our next session, where we’ll capture the next chapter in their story.
